The rule book says they are added together. But that is for the penetrating shot. The errata says "2d10 on the Damage Resolution Chart", but says nothing about additive or best of both. When I see 2d10, that means to me 2-20. The shell is going to weigh more than 500 pounds, as opposed to about 28 pounds for a 4 inch round. I am willing to assume the best case result for the 12" gun and let the Tripods fly!

I found it in the errata:
This states that it rolls a combined damage score of 2d10. This is incorrect. It should read: “This gun rolls 2d10 on the Damage Resolution Chart (for targets with a chart).” This is step 3 of the damage resolution process and no Power bonus is added to the roll.

The Super Heavy 12" gun of Goliath and the Land Iron Clad. It states a penetration hit destroys anything. Does that supersede the Martian Tripod Hit location rule? 1 hit, one kill?

I know I have manhandled 6" shells. I assumed that was the upper limit. I see the 17cm gun, about 6.7 inches, had an HE shell weight of 150 pounds. I don't see many people manhandling larger than that.

"this was the scenario I viewed and raved about in both AD postings on ..." I would have like to have seen those postings. Where were they?

In the epilogue from War of the Worlds, HG Wells wrote, "and the generator of the Heat-Rays remains a puzzle. The terrible disasters at the Ealing and South Kensington laboratories have disinclined analysts for further investigations upon the latter. " So the potential for Atom Bombs exists.

The US Army had attrited down to about 100,000 men between the wars, so there wasn't to many orphaned regiments to be had when the army reorganized to the triangular formation. Most were National Guard divisions. One of the main reasons for the triangular formation was that the army was taught to fight with only one tactic. The holding attack. One unit attacked, one unit maneuvered for a flank, while one unit acted as reserve to support which ever unit was successful. (we do not reinforce failure) This was done up and down the structure. Squads were doing it, companies, battalions, regiments. It was not always the best tactic, but it was well understood. And as you get promoted, it was easy to adapt to new unit sizes. The real secret to the success of this formation was on every level, there was HE support. 81mm on the company level, a pair of 105's on the battalion level, then off course, 36 105's and 12 155's on the regiment level.

In addition to their enormous hitting power, they would have very flat trajectories and probably be able to hit pretty much any target they could see. Are you following modern naval news? This sort of weapon is going to dominate in the next decade or two.

Harry Turtledove's book IN THE BALANCE. The first series was great. A lot of cameos of historical figures. The Aliens arrive with forces analogous to Earth 2000 technology, and were expecting to fight Knights and Longbows. A rude surprise there. Even though their tech is superior in every way, they were not quite untouchable. A good read.

Deep in the Canadian Taiga, a lone Martian Tripod had accidentally found an abandoned and flooded mineshaft and sank up to the helmet. Water quickly shorted out the systems and his last known position was largely unknown to the Martians. He is discovered by the humans first and the race is on for an opportunity to gather Martian tech or rescue a comrade. philsmartianfront.blogspot.com/2014/10/tripod-down-second-pass.html
