The first human force I'm preparing for AQotMF represents military units stationed in the western provinces of Canada at the time of the second Martian invasion. Following the story line from the rule book and Scott Washburn's first novel the Martians have landed away from major North American population centers and by 1909 have spread north to the Canadian border from North Dakota.
At that time (and until 1914 in the real world) the Canadian army consisted of only one regular infantry regiment, located in eastern Canada, and multiple militia infantry and cavalry units there and elsewhere. There were more cavalry than infantry units in the prairie provinces, with most units located in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and few in Alberta, the furthest west prairie province before the Rockies.
I've named all the militia units in the force after real units located in the western provinces. The back story is that Canadian military forces effectively being under the control of the Imperial general staff in the UK, they were involved in preparation for a possible second Martian invasion and were receiving some of the newer British equipment. This included the first types of petrol powered tanks developed in the UK, which had been replaced by the improved Imperial/Cardigan tanks and carriers and shipped to Canada, plus the 1 pdr coil gun, superseded in British service by the more powerful 2 pdr. The Canadian army was also buying American equipment or building copies under license, including steam tanks and anti-tripod guns. However, because the invasion was expected near populated areas as in 1898 the most modern equipment was located in Ontario and there were only militia units in the west at the beginning of the second invasion.
The western force includes the following militia units:
2 Mounted Command units
2 Units of Lancers with rifles and explosive lances (Lord Strathcona Horse)
3 Units of Dragoons with swords, rifles and explosives (12th Manitoba Dragoons)
3 Rough Rider units (20th Border Horse)
3 Units of Spector amoured cars (20th Border Horse)
1 Infantry Command unit
4 Units of Skirmishing Militia (103rd Regiment, Calgary Rifles)
2 Units of Militia (95th Rifles, 105th Fusiliers)
3 HMG units (1 per pair of infantry units)
2 Medium Field Artillery batteries (26th Field Regiment Royal Artillery) + 6 Flivver trucks
13 Flivver trucks
2 Diamond T Ambulances
I'm researching names for central and eastern Canadian units that could be shipped west by rail:
4 Command units - regular army
1 Unit of Lancers (Royal Canadian Dragoons)
4 Regular Infantry Units (Royal Canadian Regiment)
2 Elite Infantry Units (Governor General's Foot Guards)
2 Armored Infantry units + 6 S2G Light Transport tanks
3 HMG units
1 Field Commander's armored vehicle
3 Units of petrol powered tanks + command tank (British Lend Lease - S2G tanks)
6 Units of Steamer tanks + 2 command tanks
3 Mine layer and 1 Clamp tanks
2 Mk IV Monitors
3 Tender tanks with Ammo trailers
3 Tender tanks with Fuel trailers
3 Units of Spector armoured cars (British Lend Lease)
3 1 pdr Coil Guns + 3 S2G Light Transport tanks (British Lend Lease)
2 Batteries of Heavy Field Guns + 6 Holt tractors when available
2 Anti-tripod Guns + 2 Holt tractors when available
1 Unit of Mobile Field Artillery + Mk IIc Command Tank
12 Liberty trucks
3 Diamond T trucks
2 Liberty Ambulances
