Has anyone here got any finished examples of the barn and farmhouse included with the Kickstarter done up? If so, were there any issues with assembly? I have cut out the main building and have transferred that to sheet styrene to make it more durable, and will do the same with the barn. I will post photos as the builds progress. I was pleased to see that these were done by Scott Washburn (other compatible products at Paper Terrain). Regards, Craig

Scott,
Forgive my ignorance, please. If you read this, how close to HO scale is the original building included in the Kickstarter? I don't have any HO scale stuff yet, but was curious.
Thanks,
Craig

Morbius:
Hop over to the HOBBY section "SUPPLIERS" topic and go to the VEHICLES, CARRIAGES, WAGONS thread. I believe that I recognize the buildings on the left as plastic HO items, so you can get some feel for the relative size compared to the AQMF troops and vehicles.
I don't have any HO stuff for quick measurement. True HO is 1/87th scale, so a 6 foot human is 0.827 inches or 21mm tall. By measurement, the AQMF troops are around 0.75 inches or about 19mm tall. Scott Washburn's Paper Terrain is nominally 15mm/18mm scale. If you go to his Paper Terrain page for the Great Martian War and check out Farmstead Number 1, you will find a photo of the burned farmhouse with an AQMF trooper standing in front. I believe this is the farmhouse included in the Kickstarter set.
So, all these structures will probably be visually compatible.

Boxholder, Thanks for that advice. I have been using 1.5mm thick styrene to build the original buildings with the kickstarter and having some good fun. I've just assembled the house after bevelling the corners to 45 degrees to meet neatly. The Farmhouse Set #1 on Scott's site is very similar (bay (?) windows, the barn is a different colour and shape). Scott's version (for sale on his site) below: The use of styrene has resulted in a more solid model that should withstand a few moves and storage as required. I also have the freedom to add a little extra detail, time, resources (and skill) permitting I'll have to shave down some wood to the correct size to refit the chimneys. I'll have to look a bit more at how the wooden floor is supposed to be fitted into the cardboard version of the original farm as my styrene remodel may not work without trimming it down. The ruined version will most definitely no longer fit in my hardened version But much to my own joy (and my eldest son's), we can modify the barn to add a second floor, open the doors and cut out the windows to place units inside. Good idea Morbius. I've had the KS buildings for several months but haven't got around to assembling them yet. I'm going to add styrene backing to them to increase durability, but will use 1.0 mm thick styrene with 1.5 x 2 mm strips to reinforce the corners. What glue did you use to attach the paper to the styrene? I've had success gluing paper to styrene with rubber cement.

Loyalist,
I'm using superglue. I'll also switch to a thinner styrene, after I get to my local hobby shop. I am using 3M spray glue to glue the paper/cardboard to the styrene.

I like Scott's buildings but I knock off the little chimneys. I advise maybe pinning then down someway.

Mikedski, Yes, the chimneys struck me as being flimsy. I'll be shaving down a couple of chopsticks to stick the cardboard to, so the chimneys will be pretty solid when I glue them on. After playing around with the set included with the Kickstarter, I'll definitely be ordering some of Scott's others. I've modified the barn, so made the doors open and added a second floor/loft to allow snipers, spotters or even an MG squad to lurk up there. I've yet to paint a few extra details and cover up some of the edges. The styrene is obvious in these pictures, but will be less so, when I am done. Craig

Really nice work!! Should greatly strengthen the models.
Adding the loft is a really nice touch. You can now set the barn alight by lifting the roof and placing smoke/flame. Same for the house.

Thanks Boxholder!
I haven't done that with the house yet, but might try it later when I purchase thinner styrene.

I've been a tad ill, so work on everything has slowed down. I did a little more on this today: I'll add a couple of ladders and some other detail later, once I finish off the internal wood I've also got some HO scale fences on the way as well as a new windmill to pimp this out Craig

I've been heavy into scotts items for years - very good for the dollar investment in several scales. He always recommends bracing corners btw. Hardlec did a nice 'scales' work up which I post here again for use by you all. 15 mm is exactly 1:110 16.5 mm is exactly 1:100 18 mm is about 1:92 RR model scales: Z 1:220 about 3/4" x 1/2" N 1:160 about 1" x 5/8" HO 1:87 about 2" x 1 1/2" S 1:64 about 2 3/4" x 2" O 1:48 about 4" x 2 1/2" G 1:22.5 about 8"x 5" 1/72 = 22mm 1/56 = 28 mm (1 1/8") all the above gives you points of reference when ordering models from various plastic (MI Toy Soldier) and RR suppliers (Walters). One additional item - a US Penny is 18mm in diameter, so always have one along when you shop flea markets and conventions. A quick measure for your purchases. The penny is exactly the height of a AQ infantry figure standing up.
