Thanks Craig. The design is based on that of Royal Navy tripod masts that supported spotting/fire control tops. The main leg carried most of the weight and was wide enough to contain a ladder to access the top, and to hold electrical wiring, voice tube communications and heating pipes. The main tripod leg went through structures like the lower bridge and would continue down to an armored deck. There would be a hatch into the leg within the lower bridge.
