I have taken the coward's way out. I use Army Painter color primers (spray cans) for the basic color. For US - green For British/colonial - tan For German/Prussian - gray Black, brown, tan, pewter, silver for equipment, belts, detailing, etc I wouldn't call that "the coward's way", that sounds pretty smart and simple to me Craig

Hi Scott,
What "type" of colour is English Uniform, is it a brown?
To my eyes, looking at the bottom picture, it could be a brown or a green-brown mix. I would expect a brown, expecting varnished wood, but not sure if they camouflaged weapons back then much.
Thanks,
Craig

English Uniform is a brown with a faint yellowish/ochre hue. That's what I use for my Canadian infantry and was the British uniform colour in WWI & WWII. (In WWII the Canadian uniform was Brown Violet as in Scott's figures.)
Great paint job Scott! What's the gas mask colour? I like the reflective green and will use that on helmets and armour for my BEF troops.

Yes, English Uniform is a medium brown. The gas mask is just the olive drab color that I made the rest of the uniform. A reasonable choice, and it saves a step The little red dot on the shoulders of the figure is a keystone. I'm making my troops part of the 28th Division, Pennsylvania National Guard.

I'm painting gas masks Vallejo Field Drab which does add another color but I'm using 15 per figure counting 3 on the base so one more doesn't make much difference!

Unlike Loyalist, I won't deliberately use 15 colours per model. If it does happen, it is purely by accident Craig

OK boys and Martians! I'm working on a French contingent of various guns. tanks and AC cars,,,, does anyone have an idea what color the French painted their armored cars and heavy infantry. Certainly the tanks used camou we've all seen. And the guns are a light blue as shown in Flames of War site...but can't find any reference photo for their Puegot and Renault AC cars. I picked up vehicles from Scale Creep and the AC cars are COOOL...but what color Thanks for any suggestions PS Old Glorys Minerva armored cars are slick as well

easyred2, will you also have a small group of foreign legion added for your force? BTW, I have only seen Battleship Grey painted WW1 French armored car images in books and on the net. Hope that helps you?

Jet.com has kit with a compressor and a gravity feed double action airbrush. All for $45.00. Mine should arrive this week. I have a few tripods to paint, and a bunch of human infantry. I use luiquitex paint, and Vallejo for military colors. My little kit died a horrible death after about a month. I don't recommend this.

After a bad experience with a cheap set, I picked up an air compressor from harbor freight tools. The airbrush equipment at harbor freight is built for commercial automobile decoration.
I used to use spray paint, but lately I have been using Vallejo. They sell a primer that works well in an airbrush, with no nasty spray paint smell.

Thank you for the update harlec - sorry to hear about the demise. Here's an idea for the color blind painter - have a non-color blind person create a key for you in colors so that you can ref the key for painting your figures. On a wild note, my lovely lady got a set of 12 toenail polishes that ended up doing back stuff to her nails. I 'inherited' them for use as highlights on various Martian machines as they're all metallic in color, including a silver and a gold. Flecked I guess would be a further description. Can't wait to try them out. A dot here, a vent there, etc.
