Turn 8
Visibility - 30 - (red 8 - green 6) = 28 inches Initiative US Army roll 4 -2 (two lost command units) , Martian rolls 10 Martian turn 8 - Martian expends an order token to get the damaged veteran off the board this turn and is on the road.. Center and south of the defense line collapses from well placed grenadier fire neutralizing the heavy gun battery and destroying an entrenched MG unit. What's left of the US armor is vaporized. In the North black dust destroys the remaining entrenched HMG elements but the heavy guns are doggedly persistent in surviving Second movement phase the veteran tripod moves of the defenders table edge. (US breakpoint now at > 40% losses) Tally US Losses. 22 units US Active
7 on board 5 reinforcements 1 routed ( Hvy gun battery) Human is now at 34 % strength and is broken. Martian Victory.

Apocalyptic battle! Great AAR It would have gone even worse for the humans if the Martians had won the initiative roll more than ONCE. Talk about bad dice...you saw it here.

Yes. Only thing going for the human side. The Martian very much benefited from good reinforcement rolls first two turns and visibility average 20- 25 inches.

Tactical comment:
1) the second trench line was up against the barricades. Should have been 5 - 6 inches back so infantry can either shoot or launch assaults in a more flexible way,
2) The electric wires should remain where they are but between the trench lines. Provide a bit of cover for the second line.
Special Rules.
1) I think the river special rules are okay. Martians just benefited from lucky die rolls. I was thinking if the Martian rolls a "1" on the reinforcement table then the tripod is considered mired or damaged during the crossing in the river and unavailable.
2). Visibility and search light rules ok.
Comments are requested to including format of the bat rep.

Oh, yes. Industrial Might is a great bonus.

I agree about the luck of the roll for the river crossing. I think I'd favor the change with the '1' as it allows some balance with the 9-10 roll and indeed would make it more perilous for the Martians; another reason they're cautious about planned operations over the MS river. As far as tactical, both your ideas are much better. The added advantage of the set back on the second trench line is that the troops could fire in support of the wire somewhat. And the wire would better divert Martian fire for a turn as the machines dealt with the wire. Maybe the wire needs to be 'stronger'- more like a Tesla gun if tripped, allowing multiple targets, etc. Give it a thought.

You mean the electric arc could jump to another target if the wires are tripped? Very interesting idea.

I never calculated a point cost fore wires or trenches. The rule book I think mentions 75 points for a section of trenches whatever that means. I never really understood the scenario set up instructions in the rule book. I figured the Martians should have at least a 2:1 advantage to dug in defenders employing industrial might. In other battles the Martian were immolated atacking fixed positions with long range heavy guns in broad daylight.
How much should the Martians pay for a night attack?

You mean the electric arc could jump to another target if the wires are tripped? Very interesting idea. Exactly - the game rules are already pretty set, so you'd just apply them to the wires. All you need is the dice amount the wires generate - I'd say at least 2 if not 3 as they are powered - maybe just 2 but less chance of a battery failure (the dreaded '1'). Hits roll on your wire table. Give it a try just to see.

They basically set cost of 6"x 6" field fortifications (trenches, wires,et al) at 75 points. I always liked that scenario for giving the humans an optional second line of trenches at the cost of a Mk III tank platoon.
