Finished my Reaper Tripod Pod for the All Quiet on the Martian Front game. They are one official Reaper and two converted Slavers. The converted Slavers tentacles are made from extra long posable wrapped wire from Zinge Industries. I used the 2.4mm with custom lengths of 150mm, you just email them for a quote for the length you want. The one in the centre is the Official Reaper on its silly thin legs.

Wow, I do think I like yours better! Did you/could you list Zinge Industries in the appropriate thread?

The Zinge tentacles look better than I expected they would. I'll be ordering some for my Gatherer tripod conversions.
I'm guessing you made resin copies of the Reaper Claw and attached them and the tentacles to pieces of brass tube.

I used 5/32" evergreen tube to connect them

How good are they for stiffness? The AD claws tend to droop after a while. I'm afraid I'll break them one day when I reset them.

They are great although they wobble when you move the tripod like springs but don't shift position

I hadn't looked at my Reaper model in a few weeks and found the tentacles were drooping due to the weight of the Reaper Claws. They probably won't tolerate much more re-bending without breaking, so it's good to know the Zinge tentacles will make good replacements.
I haven't had that problem with the shorter Reaper Claw tentacles on the Royal Scientist or the Harvester.

What is messing with the tentacles is straight engineering stress. The bending stress on an end-mounted beam (called cantilevered beam) with a concentrated load at the end increases with the CUBE of length. So, increasing the length by 10% increases the bending stress by (1.1 x 1.1 x 1.1) or 1.33 times. Doubling the length increases the bending stress by a factor of 8. Conversely, cutting the length in half reduces the stress by a factor of 8.
Gravity and nature are pretty unforgiving. If you want to maintain the length, your choices are (1) go to a stiffer material or (2) increase the diameter of the tentacle or (3) both.

I was thinking about shortening them. Their length is actually a table top and storage annoyance.

Second that. The tentacles are so long they are sure to be damaged in use.

Another thought is the claw its self. Were the AD ones plastic or metal - I need to check them out here at home. I agree that shorter tentacles on all the machines would reduce damage even as it reduces visual wow.

I used 5/32" evergreen tube to connect them I think the claws would be easy to fashion from plasticard could get some nasty looking teeth in there, like the tentacles. You could cut a groove into them so the teeth could be extendable for slicing n dicing or harvesting. Making them hot swappable by magnetising, would make them dual role.

They look great!
Guitar strings might work, too. I replaced some of the small tentacles with them.
