I actually think that the entire industry is struggling under an over production of product (I know I'm apart of this...). There are so many small independent manufacturers now.
Both 3D printers & Kickstarters have also taken away from traditional store sale. We saw this on this weekend just gone at Canberra’s Wintercon. People would tell us that they couldn’t buy anything because of an upcoming kickstarter, while I heard another retailer being told that they didn’t need his products anymore because the customer could 3D print the figures themselves.
The retail part of a show may be changing & moving away from where we were in the past. I don’t know what the answer is 😞
There’s only so much money in the bucket, to use that analogy.
Scott, I’m sorry to hear that Historicon didn’t work out as well as you hoped, I feel your pain. There is ALOT of work & unpaid expense that goes into running a trade stand, so I hope that you (like me) enjoy the time & people when you are there.

What people overlook with the 3D printing is the cost of your time. You must find or create the file, modifiy it for your printer. Then, you have the cost of the material, possibly small, but real and added to the printer. Then prep, paint and finish is stll to be done, just as for purchased miniatures.
Just saying that all this eats up time that could be gaming. It is another complete hobby if that is what you want.

Considering my limited skill sets, I prefer to purchase a finished product over trying to create it. Painting is a fun business as you bring your units to life with color. With stuff like Scotts Paper Terrain and all the various companies producing really nice "3D" terrains, there's more than enough stuff to keep me busy till the end of my days. Add in the various other miniature projects I'm into (TO&Es, OOBs, Boxer Rebellion minis, etc.) there's more stuff to do than I think I have time for. Let's face it, our hobbies main benefit is the brain cells it stimulates - even given the times that alcohol is part of the mix. We're all fortunate that someone is picking the game up again. Don't Fail To Support the new owners. Remember, you can 'always' use another Assault Tripod or unit of Mk IIIs.
