First: I have a lot of difficulty dealing with paint that features colors like Mermaid Scale (green) or Zombie Pubic Hair (brown.) I tend to go for names like red, yellow and blue.
I have four tones of brown in my paint-box: Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Raw Ocher and Burnt Ochre. I also have a tube of bright orange. Brown and orange are both a mixture of red and yellow. As such, brown and orange are the only secondary colors I have trouble mixing from primary colors.
Browns are used a lot in military models, in mud/tracks/dirty things, leather as in boots, wood as in gunstocks, canvas as in puttees, packs and bags, and perhaps most unusual: Horse hide.
One problem I have painting horses is getting a selection of coloring that doesn't look like the horses came off an assembly line.
As I am facing painting some real horse cavalry, what do folks recommend for painting horses that look "horsey?"

I use a variety of beige and brown shades of Vallejo military paints for horses: Flat brown, Red brown, German camo beige, German dark brown, English uniform, Beige brown, US field drab. I also use GW brown paints: Rhinox hide (dark brown), Steel legion drab (light brown), black and white. Manes and hooves are a variety of colours and you can read up on what colour hooves occur with different coat colours. As you can see in photos of my S2G cavalry (WIP section) I add white on lower legs and white spots on the heads of some horses.

I will check this out. Thanks.
I never thought to match hoof color to hide color.
