Ahoy!
Its been about a year since a did anything on my AQMF stuff, stupid real life! But the other day I got the itch and had some free time so I dug out my Martians and got this guy painted. This assault tripod was the test mini but I'm very happy with how it's turned out so I'm going to paint the rest of my tripods in this scheme. I wanted the Martians to look advanced but also antique, old fashioned. They contrast nicely with my rough and ready, worn out US forces. What do you guys think? All comments welcome

Love that shade of gold and the subtle highlighting is awesome. Paint the rest

Paint the rest of this tripod or the rest of my tripods? This is my quick and lazy painting method, looks good crushing human tanks on the table too! I actually wanted a very clean and minimal look for my Martians, I tried a more detailed style but I just found it to "busy". I've got two more assault Tripods ready for paint and them I've got some scouts. Luckily this painting method only takes a couple of hours total. The varnishing takes the longest time! I do want to try and make locally produced tripods look different from the mars produced ones. No stat difference, just a story difference.

The next two tripods, ones not far from done and the other one is waiting on some more undercoat spray as I ran out this morning.

The only thing I'd change is to put it in my box of Tripods.

Bilko, do you have any players? Once the next couple of cons are done, we might need to get some Aussie smacks own happening

On a serious note: how did you do this?
It's actually really quick and simple.
Step 1: Undercoat Army Painter Gun metal spray. I used a spray as it's much quicker but you could brush it on too. The gun metal gives this dull metal look. If you used a brighter metal, like silver, it would come up much more gold and bright.
Step 2: 4x coats of GW Seraphim Sepia wash. I use it straight from the bottle. On the large flat areas like the helmet the wash can be a little bit uneven but it works out ok in the next step and you can't really notice.
Step 3: Drybrush the whole mini with gold. I do a quite heavy drybrush. I've been using the GW dry gold paint, works well. Drybrush the whole mini with silver, heavy once again. I've been using the GW dry paint, Necron compound I think.
Step 4: Paint the eye, and do the base but not the grass.
Step 5: A coat of gloss varnish then a couple of coats of matt varnish. I've found from using this method on several minis that even after several coats of matt varnish the mini will still be a little shiny, sort of like a satin varnish. It kind of works though, in the hand the metal looks "deep" and translucent.
Step 6: I glue on the grass to the pace.
And done! The painting takes a couple of hours. The varnishing takes the longest time of the whole process. I'm about to do another tripod so ill add some pictures to the various steps in a day or two. I hope my ramblings are helpful

At the moment it's just the better half and myself. She's new to miniatures gaming and interested but we haven't played a game yet. I'd love to get some games in! My US force is small but usable and I've got a few extras to round it out. I'm hopeful of getting my martians done in the next few weeks.
When things have settled down for you let me know and we can arrange a game

Great job and having the mrs. in on it even better. I look forward to pics and battle reports in the near future. Wonderful to have you 'back'...

Thank you sir! It's good to be back here, talking about this great game And posting pics is great motivation to paint more minis! I'm hoping to get a few games in this summer, and I'll be sure to post pics and the story to go with it.

My second tripod is coming along nicely! This one is a repaint and is a bit rougher than my first one but I'm happy with it. The green bits on the base are going to be scum filled shell craters. I haven't tried this technique before but I'm hopeful it works, will look cool if it does! This one should be done by tomorrow. Then onto number 3!
