I am finally getting around to painting the Marines for AQ. I did some research on the uniforms and found that in WWI era the Marines wore a uniform colored what was called forest green. This color was close enough to the German field grey that the Marines were confused with being Germans from a distance. Therefore the Marines quickly changed to army green uniforms. I am assuming this confusion never occurred in the AQ universe so the Marines are fighting Martians in Forest Green. I am going to try to reproduce something akin to that color by base coating in army Painter Uniform Grey, washing with green, and dry brushing with army green. So far I have the base coat done.

Nice step by step. BTW - Old Glory just released at Historicon an extensive line of Boxer Rebellion figures and resin buildings. Two things occur to me - first, the US Marine figure ($9 retail/$5.40 Old Glory Army discount) with 15 figures. 1 Officer, 1 Bugler, and 13 skirmishing rifle men as well as several other colonial nations that could be used in AQ (Russian, Japanese, Chinese Regulars, etc.) The Russian and Japanese even have their own cavalry and artillery crews. Use a Marines or Marine reservist for AQ. Second, all those really nice Chinese building for Martian invasion of China and Manchuria. Good stuff! PS - for some reason they've not posted the figures on their website yet

Comparison to doughboys. The green does come out more grey, so I guess I can call this a success. I also see I need to go back and touch up some spots I missed during inking. Amazing what a photo will reveal.

I add gravel to the base using Woodland Scenics ballast; Medium, dark brown. I use Woodland Scenics Scenic Cement to glue the ballast on. I like this product because it seems to stay slightly flexible after it drys which helps the basing products stick better as the stands are handled. At least I have not had any shedding of ballast or flock in the 5 years or so I have been using this, unlike when I used diluted white glue.

Finally is use a dropper to put Scenic Cement on the base in spots. Let the blob flatten out and spread, then dip in Woodland Scenics flock. I mix my own but the result is very close to the Geo Hex mixture , which you used to be able to buy from Woodland Scenics. Don't know if it is still available. Once this is all dry I use a spray matt finish to seal everything. This also helps eliminate shedding of flock.
