The 12 inch gun:
Weaponry Range Power Special 12-inch gun 60" +7 Variable Damage
The rules state:
Turret The turret carries a main gun and a co-axial machine-gun. When the tank shoots, either the main gun or the co-axial machine can be used – not both. The main gun is designed for taking out Tripods, while the rapid-firing machine-guns are ideal for protection against Lobototons and Drones. Super Heavy Gun The huge 12-inch gun is a marvel of modern design. It is far lighter than earlier naval guns and features an advanced shock absorbing oelio-pneumatic system that makes it possible for the Goliath to shoot without being pushed over by the recoil. The 12-inch gun is so powerful that it rolls a combined damage score of 2 D10s. Any combined damage score of 10 or more destroys its target.
As I see it:
I roll a D10 to see if I hit the tripod, usually a 6+. If I roll a hit I roll damage.
If using 2D10 total on the critical hit table, there is a 60% chance of destroying the tripod.
So:
Do I roll d10+7 to roll the Tripod's armor or above (11 for an Assault tripod, 12 for a Dominator or Overseer) and then roll 2d10 on the critical hit table? (As such a roll of 10 or above causes the target to be destroyed.)
Or do I roll 6+ to hit and then 2D10 for damage?
If the former, the chance of scoring a damaging hit of an assault tripod is .5 * .7 or 35%, 30% for a Dominator or Overseer.
It seems the former way is what the rules are trying to say, but the rules are not that clear.

Wow that is messed up because there is too much mish mashing of terms in the rules to determine what they meant.
Normally damage is a term used for when a hit penetrates, and they give the +7 for power so I think they still intend the roll roll to determine if the armor is penetrated and the unit is damaged. But instead of a single point of damage, this does 2d10 when it penetrates.
SO...
Roll a D10 to see if you hit the tripod, usually a 6+
If you hit, roll a d10 + 7 and compare to the tripods armor(11 for an Assault tripod, 12 for a Dominator or Overseer).
It you get the target armor number or above, roll 2d10 on the tripod chart - any result of 10 or greater is destroyed.

I think that is correct, but there are a number of ways to interpret the "mish-mash." It has always seemed to me that the informations in the pull-out boxes was no as thoroughly checked by the original editors, which is why, among other things, there are two statistical listings for the hotchkiss gun.
As more human equipment becomes available, certain rules are now more interesting.

I agree with the version of; roll to hit (usually a 6+), roll for armor penetration with +7 power, and if the armor is beat roll 2D10 on the tripod damage table. It keeps the standard combat sequence, which I assume is the intention of the rules.
